JUNIOR LEADERS

As part of our School Development Plan one of the objectives is to create and embed a unique Foxborough Offer that develops the whole child. One of these strands is citizenship where pupils have responsibilities beyond their classroom that add to the culture and value of the school. Year 6 students have the opportunity to become a Junior Leader.

Junior Leaders are year 6 students who are given support and training on how to become a leader and build the following attributes:

• responsibility
• reliability
• trustworthiness

They are friendly and supportive.  They work well as team members; have leadership qualities and are positive and enthusiastic. They have many roles which support children and staff in school at social times. Leadership roles support children to develop and grow socially and emotionally whilst also building resilience and confidence.

Junior Leaders roles and responsibilities include:

• helping deliver playground activities and games for children to join in,
• encourage and support children to build friendships groups
• assist in home-learning club,
• create and support a reading corner so children can come to a quiet place to read or have a story read to them,
• help in the dining hall with the cups and dinner trays

Junior leaders completed application forms and took part in interviews to secure their roles in autumn. They also received a day’s training from Mr O’Shea on Leadership and supporting play.

Later on in the year, the Junior Leaders will receive training on being a mentor. They will be supervised on how to support children who may struggle socially and with building friendships. They will give them advise and support to communicate with their peers so to build their confidence and self-esteem.

One of their first tasks this year was to plan and deliver an assembly.  Junior Leaders deliver a school assembly by introducing themselves and what they can help the children with. They also received their beautiful blue Junior Leaders jumpers which help to identify them around the school. Below are some of the commitments they shared with the school:

“You can approach us with any worries or questions you may have and we will try our best to help you, or find an adult who can. We will always be there to listen to you. We are friendly and confident and will help you build your friendship group if you need help”.

“We pride ourselves to be good role models by following the school rules and doing our best in our learning.”

“We are good listeners and will help you if we can, or find someone who can. “

Pioneer Parliament 2021-2022

Pioneer Parliament is a cross-trust committee of students working together to improve the schools of the Trust for the better. As members of the parliament, our pupils have the opportunity to:

• Give voice to their ideas and thoughts
• Make a difference
• Create a legacy
• Work with other pupils across the trust
• Work together to improve Foxborough as well as the other schools in Pioneer
• Promote British Values as well as the values we stand for.

Pupils of the Parliament have already made a difference to our schools as well as to the wider community, including: raising £1936 for our most recent charity, StopHateUK; taking part in democratic votes; and spreading awareness of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity.

We have visited the Houses of Parliament to add value to our work and see democracy in action – we have brought some of the aspects learnt into what we have done in school via UK Parliament week. When we were there, we were lucky to meet the Member of Parliament for Windsor who took some time to answer our questions about how he became a MP and how we could raise our voices and be heard.

We will continue to do even more this year but we need your help. We have already run one round of applications for Pioneer Parliament but we are looking for even more applicants. So, if you are in year 5 or year 6, please write to Miss Keeling explaining why you would like to be a part of the Parliament and the qualities you would bring to the role (please apply again even if you have already done so) by Friday 1^st October.

If you are not in year 5 or 6 but would still like to play a part in supporting our school and the trust, we want to hear from you! Please share any ideas you have about the school with Miss Keeling and she will share them with the members of Parliament both in school and across the Trust.
